The Czech Republic pulled off a 12-7 upset victory over England in Thursday’s second quarter-final match-up, the victory getting them into tomorrow’s WILC semi-final against the Iroquois Nationals (1PM ET).
The English, who finished second to Canada in Group A with a 2-1 record, were definite favourites in the game against the Jim Veltman coached Czechs, who previous to today’s victory had beaten just Team Ireland over the course of the week long tournament. Already meeting in group play last weekend, the Nationals easily beat the Czechs 25-5 and are obviously heavy favourites going into Friday’s more meaningful clash.
Canadian-born Jamie Plunkett co-led the Czechs with 4-goals while fellow Canuck Kurtis Wagar had a strong performance between the pipes, allowing just 7 goals on 37 shots. Czech native Petr Poupe also buried 4 past NLL keeper Matt Roik, England’s starting netminder.
